Blogger Helper: Manage the End of Google Reader

Warning: Feedly is having technical issues currently due to overwhelming usage  It might be wise to wait until morning before attempting to set Feedly up.

Feedly is a Google Reader extension that makes organizing and reading your feeds easier and more aesthetically pleasing. So how are they going to be helping out now?

Feedly is recreating how Google Reader functions in order to give it's users (and users of other Google Reader extensions) the ability to transition seamlessly into the new functionality.

What should you do?

I have to be honest. At first when I heard this news I freaked. Most people that work with RSS feeds use Google Reader. But here is the action plan.

Nothing will happen to your blog feed (even if you are on blogger) as it's a completely different entity than Google Reader. Google Reader is simply a way to access your feeds.

First- Set up Feedly

If you are using Chrome or Firefox download the extension (add-on). Then authorize Feedly to access your feeds. That's all there is to setting it up.

Some cool features of Feedly include one click access via the extension, subscribe to any blog via the small applet (image) located in the right lower side of any page that has a RSS feed, and save any post that you'd like to read later with the same button. Feedly follows you around the internet making it easier to subscribe to blogs and organize them instantly.

Secondly- Go to Google Reader and Download your RSS Feed Subscriptions
  1. Go to Google Reader.
  2. Click the Gear in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Click Reader Settings
  4. Click Import/Export
  5. At the bottom of this page there will be a  Download your data through Takeout link.
  6. Make sure you are the Choose Services page and it says Reader there.
  7. Click Create Archive
  8. Wait while it compiles your .zip file
  9. Download the .zip file
  10. Once it's Downloaded Extract the .zip file
  11. You will find a file that says Subscription .xml
  12. After you have completed this you will be able to import this to other feed readers.
Other Feedreaders

And that is how you manage the end of Google Reader.
